Anise or Pimpinella anisum, is a flowering plant closely related to carrots, celery and parsley. The plant produces small white fruits which we know as aniseed. Anise Seed has a very identifiable black licorice taste and is a common additive to baked goods, desserts and as a flavoring for alcohol. Anise isn’t just prized for its sweet flavor, there are many beneficial properties that these tiny seeds possess.
Aniseed is micronutrient dense and is a good source of iron. Anise also contains antimicrobial properties that help to prevent the growth of bacteria which can cause infection. Anethole, an active organic compound found in Anise, shows promise as a way to combat various strains of bacteria*. Anise is commonly used as an after dinner digestive beverage and many people enjoy the sweet, caffeine free flavor.
